Assignment #8

Should the United States have a more stringent immigration policy?

Watching Fox news one night, an interesting topic came up against  the political figures that were debating. The idea of illegal immigration and how other countries in Europe and in the middle east have been slowly stopping the problem. This raised my curiosity, bringing up my research question. Should the United States have a more stringent immigration policy? I really dont have alot of knowledge on this topic so i am very eager to do some research and find out. Most of the facts that i know come form the media, such as news and radio stations, however we all know how those facts are biased. I did do a double entry before in another class and i think they are great, just like in the last class this one also helped me pick my topic. I think it really makes you think more deeply about a topic that you might consider to write about. As far as research is concerned im worried about reading papers that are going to be extremely biased making my paper biased as well. Hopefully there are papers that are taking both sides, because i would like to explore why they should and shouldnt. my thesis coming in is that they should, but maybe at the end reading the neutral papers it all might change. My paper topic follows the criteria and some words that I may search with are US immigrant policy.

Assignment #7

Time flies when your having fun!

Looking back on my progress, honestly I think I didn’t really progress at all in my confidence in writing. 

I have however become more aware of picking out others point of view on their topic. This semester i have seriously been lacking in the writing category, since most of my classes are labs and interactive, the blog posts were not my favorite, hence me writing this at 11:30 the day all the blogs are due.

The reason for my procrastination I think is quite simple, I got seriously lazy this semester, but hopefully changing that the next half of the class. 

As far as the class goes i really enjoy it, the group discussions in class really help me understand the readings much better, having people pick out things in the paper that i would have never thought about, and giving me another perspective on the writing.

The only think that i would change in this class are the actual topics for the essays. for example writing the one about if a bachelor’s degree is a good idea, actually made me doubt my reasoning of if its really a good idea, I dont think that the topic is interesting to be honest and i did not have a fun time writing it. I think its safe to say that a bacheleors degree is worth it, but why the need for a "how come?'

I am very excited though about the next paper since its our own topic.

I have become more aware of the sides of an argument, stating both of them in a paper, I have also learned a lot about the ways of incorporating sources in a paper.

Assignment #6

Finding good employment after degree-  The idea that having a bachelor’s degree is worth perusing is supported by the theory that finding a good job follows that aspect. All of the authors including the 2 that I had to pick, briefly explain that a bachelor’s degree is indeed helpful to a career. Even tho some of them value it more than others it is still talked about in all of the papres.

Debt after college- The idea of debt is present in all of the essays also. Wilson supports the theory by making a simple statement that it is ones responsible theory to pay back the debt. She also states that a gameplan is needed, agreeing with Ungars points. That college is based on your choices and it was your choice to pay for an expensive college

Assignment #5

The topic to debate, whether or not one should pursue a bachelor’s degree. Well as a college student perusing a bachelor’s degree, I obviously think that it’s a good idea for a person to get one.  A liberal arts as a whole is education combined with common knowledge.  Knowing the basics such as math and writing nowadays isn’t going to cut it in the real world. Careers are now expanding there factors to get in and more and more people need to improve on skills that were not always needed. Being a well-balanced individual in the knowledge field makes you better off than someone who is not. In our society today, it is clear that the more knowledge that someone receives the better off they are in following their career.  To me a bachelor’s degree means success, without it the pressure of my family and society would make me feel like a complete failure. Knowing that I have gone through schooling to obtain a bachelor’s degree puts me apart from others, the fact that I had the courage and willpower to accomplish it makes me in the end a better choice for a job candidate.  Society as whole portraits the biggest pressure on individuals getting out of highschool, most are taught to become doctors an lawyers, and it was also taught to look down on other jobs such as plumbers or mechanics. Creating a barrier of social classes. 

Assignment #4. Legalizing Same sex Marriage.

 Supporters of "traditional marriages" generally hold that lawful marriage should be between only one man and one woman, and that the federal government should not compel a state to recognize any relationships to the contrary. They believe God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman, They say that the amendment is essential because it protects marriage from redefinition by either state legislatures or the courts. In addition, they believe the amendment would stop activist courts from giving away most of the legal benefits of marriage to same-sex couples. They say that marriage is a historic, cultural institution and fear having same sex marriages will confuse current generations.

On the other hand, supporters of same-sex or "gay" marriages, generally hold that lawful marriage and the benefits of it should be made available to couples regardless of sexual orientation, and that the denial of this right to homosexuals would unlawfully infringe on their right to pursue happiness.  They say that there is no amendment in the constitution that defines sexual orientation. Equality should be the only "word" coming out of the constitution. They clam that if the amendment is passed then many families will lose the majority of their benefits.

Assignment #3

The American Dream is dead to some, alive and well to others. It was born form the Manifest Destiny, the concept of going west and discovering freedom to achieve your goals of happiness.  The notion of the American Dream to people in the 1920’s compared to now has dramatically changed. Brandon King believes that the American Dream is still alive, however I believe that his main argument to the essay is the dream is  barely alive, and to fix it we will place upon it conservative American policies.  Brandon King is making the dream sound less like a dream but more of cold a reality

The reason that I chose this article is because, everyone has an American Dream. No matters what social class, or what status/race/religion, everyone is thought to hope for a greater “dream”. I was hoping that this essay went into detail why the American dream is fading away, however it went in another direction on how the government can step in to change it.

As an immigrant from Poland I am very aware of the American Dream. The idea of leaving your stable and familiar situation, and what you have known for years to chase the “dream” . Coming to America you are already picturing the great land of opportunity and freedom, since that’s what the dream was perceived as back then. The reality is that many immigrants come here and barely make enough to supply the necessities. The truth of the matter is that the gaps between social classes are getting bigger and the middle class is expanding, as both the rich and the poor classes are getting smaller. That means the ability to move up social classes and become “rich” in society’s point of view is not attainable. As for my dream I am perfectly content with owning a house with a white picket fence, a loving family, a stable job as a teacher, and the ability to be prepared for the future financially. :)
